ww2dbaseCheap but rugged, the D.XXI fighters of the Royal Netherlands Air Force flew against the German Luftwaffe invasion in May 1940. Though out-classed, the D.XXI fighters leveraged on their good maneuverability and scored a number of kills; however, most of them were destroyed by the end of the invasion. The D.XXI fighters that made their way to Finland, though, performed much better against Russian aircraft during the Winter War. These fighters were generally considered obsolete by the later parts of the Continuation War.

In 1937 the Finnish Government placed an order with Fokker for seven D.XXI and a license to build the fighter at the Valtion Lentokonetehdas (State aircraft factory). Thirty-eight Finnish built fighters were completed in 1939 and served with HLeLv.24 of the Finnish 2nd Air Regiment during the Winter war. During 1941 a further fifty were built powered by Pratt and Whitney R-1535 Twin Wasp Junior engines acquired from the USA. These and the surviving Mercury powered D.XXIs equipped HLeLv.32 at the commencement of the Continuation War. No other production took place until 1944 when five additional aircraft were manufactured (one of which had a retractable undercarriage),

In Hoogeveen (Netherlands, Drenthe) grandfather Jack van Egmond and his grandson Tom Wills are building (!) a Fokker XXI. The unique fact is that is will be flying in mid 2021.

See http://www.rtvdrenthe.nl/nieuws/148093/Uniek-Fokker-jachtvliegtuig-voor-het-eerst-naar-buiten-Dit-is-een-droom> for a news item about the first roll-out of the XXI during an airshow in Hoogeveen in May 2019.
