Battle of Chahar
Contributor: C. Peter Chen
ww2dbaseWith the Beiping-Tianjin region just secured, the Japanese Kwangtung Army launched Operation Chahar under direct command of General Hideki Tojo, Chief of Staff of the Kwangtung Army. Tojo's forces were augmented with elements of General Kiyoshi Tatsuki's 1st Army and forces of the Mongolian puppet state of Mengjiang. The battle arena was Suiyuan Province, China, site of a failed Mongolian invasion almost four years earlier. Despite being swiftly reinforced by the 13th and 17th Infantry Corps and the 1st Cavalry Corps of the Central Army, the Chinese were routed by the invaders which fielded 12 medium tanks and 25 light tanks and tankettes.
