  • 236 German bombers attacked Glasgow and Clydeside, Scotland, United Kingdom for the first time, targeting munitions factories and docks, sinking 3 cargo ships and damaging 2 destroyers. Atlantic Ocean
  • British sloop HMS Scarborough intercepted Norwegian whalers Star XIX and Star XXIV when these German-controlled whalers were en route to France. Both whalers were scuttled by their German crews to prevent capture. ww2dbase [CPC]
  • The 7,005-ton British cargo steamer Empire Frost, damaged by German aircraft on the previous day, was in tow by the Dutch tug Seine when she was again bombed. She sank in the Irish Sea west of Skomer Island with the loss of six crewmen. ww2dbase [Irish Sea | HM]
United Kingdom
  • The 4,738-ton British merchant steamer Tacoma City Sunk on the after being mined in the Formby Channel, River Mersey, northwestern England, United Kingdom. ww2dbase [Liverpool, England | HM]
  • The 1,307-ton Dutch steamship Perseus (Captain R. Gudde) was attacked by German aircraft and was sunk with an air torpedo, 12 miles north west of Bardsey Island at the tip of the Lynn Pennisula, Wales, United Kingdom. The requisitioned Perseus was on her way from Avonmouth, Bristol to Manchester. All crew were saved the next day by a British ship. ww2dbase [Bardsey Island, Wales | HM]
  • The 304-ton British tug Bullger struck an aircraft-laid mine and sank in Druridge Bay near Amble, Northumberland, north east England, United Kingdom. ww2dbase [Amble, England | HM]
  • The 4,891-ton Norwegian steam merchant Ullapool of Allied Convoy SC 23 struck a parachute mine in the River Mersey in northwestern England, United Kingdom and broke in two. Sixteen men, including the Captain, William Thwaites, were lost; 22 survived. ww2dbase [England | HM]
  • The 842-ton Norwegian cargo ship Samlanes, on voyage from Swansea, Wales, United Kingdom to Shoreham, England, United Kingdom with a cargo of 907 tons of coal, was sunk by a mine, two miles off the Lizard peninsula.
