• Admiral John Newton relieved Admiral William Halsey as the commanding officer of the South Pacific area. Combined with this personnel change was the transfer of the Solomon Islands region to the Southwest Pacific command. ww2dbase [Solomon Islands Campaign | CPC]
• The RAF's 2nd Tactical Air Force was formed to train close support aircraft squadrons for tactical operations during Operation Overlord. ww2dbase [AC]
• Destroyers USS Nicholas and USS Strong and oiler USS Monongahela arrived at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. ww2dbase [Nicholas | DS]

• At 0929 hours in the Bay of Biscay north of Corunna, Spain, three Mosquito aircraft from 307 Polish Squadron RAF accompanied by another from 410 Squadron RACF spotted and attacked a group of German submarines, U-68, U-155, U-159, U-415, and U-634, outward bound for the North Atlantic. The leading Mosquito aircraft piloted by Squadron Leader Stanislaw Szablowski was hit by flak as it strafed U-68 and turned to attack U-155, the port engine of the aircraft stopped and the pilot was forced to turn back and return to RAF Predannack, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom where the pilot brought her down in a belly landing. The second aircraft piloted by Flight Officer then attacked but he and the other pilots were held off by the heavy flak barrage put up by the German gunners and the attack was called off. Aboard U-68, the commander, the Second Watch Officer and one of the men were wounded. The First Watch Officer, Oberleutnant zur See Ekkehard Scherraus, took command. One man, Obergefreiter Hans Schaumburg, was hit while operating an MG38 machinegun, fell overboard and could not be recovered. The boat returned to base in company with U-155. • Aquila VI departed Bordeaux, France with a cargo of mercury, stell, 800 Mauser MG 151/20 aircraft cannons, a 500-kilogram SG 500 bomb, torpedoes, and two Würzburg radar sets on board. Her passengers included Colonel Kinjo Satake (trained with latest German telecommunications technology), Heinrich Foders (Telefunken radar engineer with Würzburg anti-aircraft radar blueprints), and a number of German radar and shipbuilding engineers. ww2dbase [Luigi Torelli | Bordeaux, Aquitaine | CPC]

• USS Tunny attacked a Japanese convoy about 20 miles east of Murilo Atoll, Marshall Islands. As she moved into position to attack the three transports, the two escorting destroyers detected her and attacked with 4-inch shells.
