- Private Richard Kelliher won the Victoria Cross in New Guinea for knocking out Japanese positions to rescue his pinned down Australian comrades. - Chiang Kaishek was elected the Chairman of the Nationalist Government, making him both the head of state and head of government of the Republic of China.
