- German submarine U-435 attacked Allied convoy QP-14 50 miles west of Jan Mayen Island, Norway at 0718 hours, sinking US merchant ship Bellingham (all 75 aboard survived), British merchant ship Ocean Voice (civilian commodore J. C. K. Dowding's ship; all 89 aboard survived), and British fleet oiler RFA Grey Ranger (6 were killed, 33 survived). ww2dbase [Arctic Convoys | CPC]
- British submarine HMS Unruffled sank Italian merchant ship Leonardo Palomba 25 miles east of Sousse, Tunisia. ww2dbase [CPC]
- USS Bailey departed San Francisco bound for Kodiak, Alaska escorting stores ship USS Bridge. ww2dbase [Bailey | DS]
- In the early morning hours the unescorted Norwegian merchant ship Vibran (Master Per E. Palm) was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-582 about 400 miles north-northwest of the Azores; she was in ballast and on her way to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The master, 34 crew members, two gunners and eleven passengers were lost. The ship was reported missing and was presumed lost. - Australian destroyer HMAS Voyager departed Darwin, Australia with 400 men of Australian 2/4th Independent Company, sailing for the island of Timor to evacuate troops of Australian 2/2nd Independent Company and Portuguese civilians. ww2dbase [Darwin, Northern Territory | CPC]

- Japanese submarine I-29 sank US freighter Paul Luckenbach 800 miles west of Kochi, India. ww2dbase [Raids into the Indian Ocean | CPC]
