- The Japanese 7th Air Brigade, in two waves (the second consisting of Japanese Navy aircraft), launched a joint attack against an Allied target, successfully bombing installations in heavily defended Calcutta (now Kolkata), India. The Japanese airmen achieved surprise and enjoyed some luck, causing slight damage to Kiddapore docks and destroying or badly damaging nine Hurricane fighters and one Spitfire fighter. ww2dbase [Calcutta, Bengal | AC]
- Canadian 1st Infantry Division and Indian 8th Infantry Division attacked across the Moro River, capturing Villa Rogatti before dawn, but a subsequent German counterattack forced the Canadians to abandon the town and withdraw back across the river. - German forces began a week-long operation to deport Jews from Bialystok, Poland. While about 10,000 were deported, unknown thousands of Jews were able to hide. 700 were killed while resisting. - The USAAF 306th Bomb Group flying from RAF Thurleigh launched a bombing raid against La Rochelle, France but aborted over the French coast due to weather. ww2dbase [RAF Thurleigh | Thurleigh, England | DS]
