ww2dbaseMako (now Makung or Magong) in the Pescadores Islands in the Taiwan Strait was among the major Japanese Navy bases in the Taiwan. It was important for the patrol of Chinese waters during the Second Sino-Japanese War and into the Pacific War. It was upgarded to Guard District status in Nov 1941. When the Pacific War began in Dec 1941, it was home to three minesweeper divisions (44, 45, and 46), three patrol vessels, three D1A aircraft, and cargo ship Kure Maru No. 5. It was decommissioned in 1943 and moved to Takao (now Kaohsiung), Taiwan.

4 Jul 1901 Mako (now Makung), Pescadores islands, Taiwan was named a third echelon naval port of the Japanese Navy. Vice Admiral Hikonjo Kamimura was named as its first commanding officer.

27 Oct 1944 B-24 bombers of No. 159 Squadron RAF from Kharagpur in eastern India mined the Penang Strait.
4 Apr 1945 Six B-25 bombers of 498th Bombardment Squadron and six B-25 bombers of 500th Bombardment Squadron, both of USAAF 345th Bombardment Group, took off from San Marcelino in western Luzon island, Philippines to attack Mako (now Magong or Makung) harbor, Pescadores Islands in the Taiwan Strait. The attack commenced at 1430 hours, sinking a 2,000-ton tanker and the 2,500-ton freighter Horei Maru. 500th Bombardment Squadron lost one bomber to anti-aircraft fire.
