ww2dbaseThe Fresnes Prison was located in the town of Fresnes south of Paris, France. It was constructed between 1895 and 1898. During the German occupation of France in WW2, it housed captured British Special Operations Executive agents and members of the Resistance. When Allied forces neared Paris in the summer of 1944, Gestapo guards reduced the prison population by execution, and then relocated surviving prisoners to various concentration camps east of France. It remains in use as a prison facility at the time of this writing in 2017.

It was my pleasure to have been a friend of your father for many years when he lived in Park Lane Whitefield. I remember his daughter but always thought her name was Maria but perhaps you were known as that. I was at Bury General at the time of his death and Maria and Terry came back to my house which was nearby. My husband and I attended his funeral at Blackley.

My French born mother may have been interned in Fresnes sometime between between November 1942 and May 31, 1943, after which she was sent to German prisons. Her name was Andree Boziere Santoni, but she may have used the name Liliane Santoni. She was aiding the French underground. Daughter Marilyn is looking for details or any information. Thank you.

I am looking for records for Edith Duckwitz nèe Caspary who was imprisoned and interrogated by the Sicherheitsdienst at Fresnes late 1943 until August 1944 when she was transferred to Berlin. When she was arrested in Haute Savoie for working with the Maquis she was initially believed to be French from Strasbourg. She had been involved in a plot to kill Hitler before WWII which is why she was transferred to Berlin as the Allies approached Paris: in the aftermath of the July 1944 coup attempt, the Nazis thought she could provide more exhaustive information about the anti-Nazi German Resistance. Are there records of prisoners kept by the Germans during WWII?

In FBI interview she said she used the name Edith Durenberger with French documentation provided for previous espionage work she’d done. The Germans only established her true identity around April 1944. Apparently that was when the interrogations began in earnest.

I think my father was held in Fresnes before being sent to Stalag Luft 3.
