ww2dbaseThe Nanning Airfield in Guangxi Province, China was originally one of the fighter strips of the Guangxi regional warlord's air force, hosting fighters of Russian and Japanese manufacture in the 1930s. In Nov 1937, the Guangxi Air Force joined the Nationalist central government's Chinese Air Force, and the squadrons based in Nanning received new Chinese Air Force designations. In 1938, Nanning was subjected to several Japanese air attacks. After the Americans joined the war in Dec 1941, US Army Air Forces units slowly arrived in China. During that period, Nanning Airfield was primarily used by photographic reconnaissance variant of P-38 Lightning aircraft, but it at times hosted US fighters and bombers as well. The base was closed in Oct 1945. In 1962, the airfield was re-opened as the civilian Nanning Wuxu Airport; it remains in this capacity today.
