Note the emergency splice in the rudder control cables; that was done by Zamperini in-flight returning to Funafuti. The plane had almost 600 holes and all enlisted gunners were wounded, one succumbing to his wounds later that night. Before the war, Louis Zamperini competed in the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games and shook Hitler’s hand. After this photo was taken, Zamperini survived being adrift at sea and was rescued only when he was captured by the Japanese. He survived the war and is the subject of the book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand.
