Ki-44s were deployed to protect the home islands. Units were stationed in China and Burma.
In November 1944 a special unit was formed made up from volunteers who would crash their aircraft into B-29s.
Some units were located in Sumatra and were protecting the oil fields at Palembang.

Ki-44-II assigned to the Akeno Army flying school. School marking on tail isn't complete
Japanese characters in the center need to be applyed. The school also flew Home Defence Missions, the Ki-44 also flew night missions against the B-29s.

Nice inflight photograph of an early Ki-44 Tojo. Aircraft has early telescopic gun site
later aircraft had reflector type gun sites.
