This is Doolittle Crew #6 (sixth to fly off Hornet). L to R they are: Lt Chase J Nielsen (Navigator), Lt Dean E Hallmark (Pilot), Sgt William J Dieter (Bombardier), Lt Robert J Meder (Co-Pilot), Cpl Donald E Fitzmaurice (Engineer/Gunner). Sgt Dieter and Cpl Fitzmaurice drown after their aircraft ditched off the Chinese coast. The other three made it ashore and were taken prisoner. While prisoners of the Japanese, Lt Hallmark was executed by firing squad and Lt Meder died of disease. Only Lt Nielsen survived the war, the highest casualty rate of the mission.
