Admiral Raymond Spruance later commended Captain Boynton Braun’s precautionary and rather unusual decision to launch four P-47s, describing it as “commendable initiative.” The USAAF fighters served as protective fighter cover until all radar screens were clear of threats, then they flew on to Saipan, their intended destination.
