Admiral Raymond Spruance later commended Captain Boynton Braun’s precautionary and rather unusual decision to launch four P-47s, describing it as “commendable initiative.” The USAAF fighters served as protective fighter cover until all radar screens were clear of threats, then they flew on to Saipan, their intended destination.

The P-47s taking off from Manila Bay are the same planes seen lined up at Bellows Field, Hawaii in series https://ww2db.com/photo.php?list=sp&sp=series&image_id=14875
