yet another caption error: all of Alabama, South Dakota, and Washington log that they were moored in Efate on October 29 1943 as units of TG 53.2 (redesignated from TF 37 that day). They had entered port on October 24 (South Dakota on October 19) and next went underway on October 31.

Right again! The original caption date was taken from the source’s caption but apparently it is incorrect. Dates provided by the Navy for their photos are often a little iffy and frequently reflect the date the photo file number was created rather than the date of the photo. In this way, when the Navy’s date for a photo is off, it is usually dated a few days AFTER the photo was taken. If this is the case with this photo (and this may not be the case), then it would make sense that the photo was taken a few days before 29 Oct 1943 during exercises prior to arriving at Efate. For this reason, the caption date has been modified to be a little less precise. Thank you for bringing this up.
