Besides horses and mules used by the US armed forces during WWII, dog's did their part for the nation's defense. Dog's were trained and used for patrol, guard, messenger, they were used as rescue and sled dog's in Alaska and for other duties.
PRIVATE K-9:
The US Army even had its own K-9 Corps dog's went through basic training and were trained in commands, riding in vehicles, and trained under gunfire. The dog's and their handlers guarded ammo and supply dumps, factories, military installations, and served with GIs in combat.
Did you know many of the dog's were wounded and killed many were promoted and retired as Sergeant's and Master Sergeant's. Many dog's, like there fellow soldiers, some of whom paid the ultimate price toward final victory...
Most of the dog's were German Shepherds or other large breed dog, they served in the Pacific and in Europe. Dog's served with the US Army, (USAAF) US Army Air Forces, Navy, Coast Guard and Marines,
Did you know that 2,000 dog's served with the US Coast Guard on patrol with Guardsmen on horseback or in vehicles. At the end of WWII in 1945, 10,000 dog's had served during WWII.
