The official USMC captions for this set of photos date the bombing mission as Aug 10, 1945 but this is incorrect. The actual mission logs for both the bomber squadron (VMB-611) and the fighter squadron (VMF-115) say the raid occurred on Aug 9, 1945. This photograph appeared on the front page of the Titusville Herald, Titusville, Pennsylvania on Aug 22, 1945.
