My father was a 22 year old Navy pilot in the VF-84 on the Bunker Hill from February 1945 to May 10. He told us that he had just left the ready room onto the flight deck when the first plane hit. I have read the book Dangers Hour where I learned about the parts my father never spoke about.

These arrows are Tail Geometrics identifying the aircraft as part of VF-84 flying from USS Bunker Hill. All Air Groups had their own set of Tail Geometrics while aboard a particular carrier. In strikes involving aircraft from multiple carriers, these symbols were used by pilots after the strikes so they could form up with planes from their own carrier for the return flight.
