On his uniform tunic, Commodore Kiefer is wearing his aviator’s wings and ribbons for the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, the Purple Heart (without the gold star he was entitled to), the World War I Victory Medal, the American Defense Medal with Fleet Clasp, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with seven battle stars, the American Campaign Medal (out of order), and the Philippine Liberation Medal with one bronze star. Only the World War II Victory Medal is missing. Note also that he has some photos on his desk that were taken aboard the Ticonderoga.
