Up until this day, this had been the headquarters of the Canadian 6th Airborne Division who had originally taken Wismar over stiff German resistance. Once the war ended, Wismar was in the Russian zone and so it was set to be turned over to the Soviet Army. Reluctant to give up their prize, the Canadians prolonged the negotiations with the Russians for several days, allowing many prominent Germans to escape to the west before coming under Soviet authority. Some say this also allowed the Danes to better secure their southern border to discourage Soviet influences from entering Denmark.
