There are several things worth noting in this photograph. First, note that this pilot caught the No. 1 wire which a pretty good flying when it comes to landing on the small flight deck of an escort carrier. Secondly, note the Landing Signal Officer’s (LSO) platform and screen. Next, though hard to see, the shamrock emblem of Composite Squadron 90 can be seen on the aircraft’s tail. And lastly, note the white tape over the machine gun openings in the leading edges of the wings. These openings were taped to protect them from sea spray and other contaminates entering the guns while sitting on the flight deck or during launch. If the guns are needed, the tape is easily pierced.
