MACHINE GUN SQUAD, TAKING UP THEIR DEFENSIVE POSITIONS. NCO WITH FIELD GLASSES, LOOKING FOR TARGETS, THE MG42 IS MOUNTED ON A TRIPOD AND USED THIS WAY AS A HEAVY MACHINE GUN W/ZEISS ZF40 TELESCOPIC SIGHT WITH A RANGE UP TO 1600 METERS.
RATE OF FIRE FOR THE MG42 WAS 1200 ROUNDS PER MINUTE, OF 7.92mm AMMUNITION, NOW THAT'S EATING A LOT OF LEAD! YOU COULD BURN UP THE BARREL FAST.
DID YOU KNOW A PROJECT FOR A REPLACEMENT OF THE MG42 WAS BEING TESTED. DESIGNATED THE MG45, IT FIRED 120,000 ROUNDS DURING A FIRING TEST, AT A RATE OF FIRE AROUND 1350 ROUNDS PER MINUTE, THIS WEAPON COULD FIRE BETWEEN 1350 TO 1500 ROUNDS PER MINUTE! ABOUT TEN WERE MADE.
DEVELOPMENT DRAGGED ON,AND THE WAR ENDED ANY CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT.
GERMAN INFANTRY SQUADS WERE BUILT AROUND THE MACHINE GUN WITH THE RIFLEMAN USED TO PROTECT THE GUN AND CARRY AMMUNITION FOR IT.
THE GERMAN ARMY USED THE MG42 AS BOTH A LIGHT AND HEAVY MACHINE GUN.
I'M NOT AN EXPERT, BUT IF ANYONE HAS ADDED INFORMATION OR CORRECTIONS, POST IT HERE.

I am lookink for information about my ancestors participating in world war II. My grandfathers name is Reidar Bauer, he had many brothers and two of them where participating them was at the east front and one of them as an aft gunner on an luftwaffe airplane. Both of them died during the war.
