A technicallity, it wasn't Lockheed, it was Vega. Across the street, kind of a Chevy, GMC thing.
Mom worked on it.

Photo of the 11th Boeing-built B-17E sent to
Lockheed aircraft, and installed Allison
liquid-cooled engines.
Program started in March 1942,and three of
the Allison-powered bombers were known as
XB-38's.
Aircraft in photo, was lost one month later
after 12 hours of testing. All but one of the crew parachuted safely.
