The last P-38 was delivered to the USAAF in
September 1945. Unit cost for each P-38J was
$97,147, 1940s dollars.
The P-38 was phased out of service by 1949
the P-38 was the only US fighter to remain in production throughout the war. After WWII
many of the aircraft that were in overseas locations, were bulldozed or scrapped.
The US passed post-war surplus P-38s to friendly air forces, some found their way
to South America serving with Honduras until
retired in 1965.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE:

CIA/Operatives used a P-38M during the 1954 Guatemalan coup d'etat. The aircraft carried no marking, in the Spook World the aircraft was "Sanitized". Italy retired its P-38s in 1956 the P-38 found jobs in the civilian world as aerial survey to unlimited air racer
to war bird and flying at air shows
