ww2dbaseKároly Berger was born in Cservenka, Hungary, Austria-Hungary (now Crvenka, Serbia) in 1888. He fought in WW1, during which he was seriously wounded. He remained in the Hungarian military during the inter-war period, rising to colonel rank by the end of the 1920s. In 1932, he changed his surname to Beregfy. During the first two years of the European War, Károly Beregfy was the commandant of the Hungarian military academy. Between 1941 and 1944, he served in the field as the commanding officer of the 6th Corps, 3rd Army, 1st Army, and then then Replacement Army, successively. In Oct 1944, he was made the Minister of Defense in Prime Minister Ferenc Szálasi's government, holding the concurrent position as the head of the Hungarian Army. He was captured by Americans in Apr 1945. Tried and found guilty of war crimes, Beregfy was executed by hanging alongside of Szálasi in Mar 1946.

30 Oct 1944 Károly Beregfy called for all available resources in Hungary to be assigned to war efforts.
1 Nov 1944 Károly Beregfy was promoted to the rank of colonel general.
30 Apr 1945 Károly Beregfy was captured by the Americans.
9 Jun 1945 Károly Beregfy was transferred out of American custody and was placed in a Hungarian prison while awaiting trial.
1 Mar 1946 Károly Beregfy was found guilty of war crimes.
12 Mar 1946 Károly Beregfy was executed by hanging in Budapest, Hungary.
