ww2dbaseMasao Maruyama was the commander of the Japanese 6th Infantry Brigade that was involved in the Lugou Bridge incident that officially started the Second Sino-Japanese War in Jul 1937. As the commander of the 2nd Infantry Division at the rank of lieutenant general, he was deployed to Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands in Sep 1942. In Oct 1942, he led troops during a Japanese offensive at Matanikau River and then at Henderson Field, through both battles his division suffered heavy casualties. He and the remainder of his unit were evacuated from Guadalcanal in Feb 1943. He retired from active duty in 1944.
