ww2dbaseThe destroyer Ellet served off the east coast of the United States and the Gulf of Mexico before moving to the Pacific in anticipation for Japanese aggression. When the Pacific War broke out, she escorted convoys and aircraft carriers, including escorting the carrier Wasp as it transport James Doolittle and his raiders on their famous bombing mission on Japan. In Jun 1942 she also participated in the Battle of Midway. During the invasion of Guadalcanal and Tulagi, she played a utility role, performing a wide-array of support tasks such as setting up an anti-aircraft screen and some bombardment roles. Ellet also performed escort duties, as noted for the rescue of survivors off Savo Island and from the cripple Australian cruiser Canberra. She participated in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons in late Aug 1942, then sailed with the Marshalls, New Guinea, Marianas, and Ulithi invasion fleets. She completed her WW2 career in the central Pacific as a convoy escort and rescue ship, though she did shell Iwo Jima in Dec 1944 and Jan 1945.

I loved him so much, he would have nightmares about it but ooud never talk. I do have a pic of the crew members, Someone told me he had hit an officer, this was hard to beleave lol. But would truly like to talk to your friend.

I have a bracelet that he and a shipmate made out of a downed Japanese plane that was on the island of Tulagi. Also, I used to live down the street from a man named Cecil Teal. The street was Smalley Rd. in Hockley, Texas. Could this be the same man as your father? I would love to have pictures of the crew and ship, if anyone would like to email them.

My father, Walter Franklin Yale, served aboard the Ellet and was on board and out to sea when Pearl Harbor was attacked. I don't know how long he was aboard, but he joined the Navy in 1935 and was a Machinist Mate. He retired a Chief Machinist Mate in 1954 and joined many of his shipmates in 1986 at age 73. I will find some pictures I have and post them on the Ellet facebook page. I didn't know until an older cousin advised me recently that he was on the Ellet at Pearl and with the carrier group that launched the Doolittle raid on Tokyo. I would love to hear any history on the Ellet and any of it's crew members that are still with us. Dad didn't talk about the war, but I thought he told me once that the Ellet was hit by a kimakaze in which a friend of his was kkilled and a few colorful bar encounters in Galveston, where he was saved by his big Polish buddy, but I have no name. TM-2 Donald H Curtis was honorably discharged from Navy and went to Army's OTS. He eventually became a Colonel. I am his grandson, and wish to know more about his life. I know that he has been all over the Pacific and Atlantic theaters of war, and I have his medals, tapes, patches and ribbons. I don't know exactly when, why or how they were received/earned.
