Hi, anonymous Fred's nephew. It turns out that Pompano was not lost in a mine field but sunk by Japanese Sa seaplane and sub-chaser depth charges just a mile and a half from the Japanese coast near the Shiriyazaki Lighthouse on Honshu:

The Navy will conduct a dive with photos to verify the first week of June 2013.

Hi Randy,
I really enjoyed the article regarding my uncle Fred. I also enjoyed Elizabeth story. I feel closer to the uncle I never met. Thank you

Hi, Linda! Or should I say anonymous Fred's niece? That article is an except from a book, and I keep waiting for the rest of the story on finding the Pompano as an excuse nit to finish the book. Still nothing more from the Navy after more than a year. I'm taking the month of August off and hope to finish it by September.

My uncle Fredrick Kirschbaum served on the USS Pompano before she sank off the sea of Japan after being caught in a mindfield. JK
