Skate Operational Timeline

16 Jul 1944 USS Skate (Commander W. P. Gruner, Jr.) fired six torpedoes at a Japanese convoy in the Sea of Okhotsk, claiming one hit that sank a Japanese tanker. Japanese records showed that two ships were lost, the 1,942-ton Japanese troop transport Nippo Maru and the 1,937-ton Japanese tanker Nikkaku Maru.
10 Jun 1945 USS Skate sank Japanese submarine I-222 in the Sea of Japan.
4 Jul 1945 Five of the eight surviving submarines of Operation Barney's Hydeman's Hellcats arrived safely at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii: USS Flying Fish, Spadefish, Tinosa, Bowfin, and Skate. All nine submarine captains from Hydeman's Hellcats received the Navy Cross, or gold star in lieu thereof, for this patrol.

My Dad was on the 7th war patrol of USS Skate SS 305 into the Sea of Japan . His name is Joe Hill Torpedomen in the aft torpedo room . Anyone serve with him or any son who's Dad was on that patrol please contact me . God Bless this great county & those that fought for my Freedom . Bill Hill
