Z32 Operational Timeline
9 Jun 1944 | German 8th Destroyer Flotilla (destroyer Z32, destroyer Z24, destroyer ZH1, and torpedo boat T24) departed Brest, France, sailing for Cherbourg. They were surprised and attacked by eight Allied destroyers. British destroyer HMS Ashanti sank ZH1 with torpedoes; ZH1 had previously been the lead ship of Dutch Gerard Callenburgh-class destroyers, captured by the Germans in 1940. Canadian destroyers HMCS Haida and HMCS Huron damaged Z32, forcing her to run aground on ÃŽle de Batz on the Brittany coast of France, wrecking Z32 in the process. Z24 and T24 successfully escaped the Allied attack. British destroyer HMS Tartar was damaged. |
