ww2dbaseNamed after the decisive Italian victory at the Battle of Vittorio Veneto during WW1, battleship Vittorio Veneto was commissioned into service just in time for Italy's entrance into WW2. She was designed by Umberto Pugliese and was the first battleship to exceed the restrictions set by the Washington Treaty. In Nov 1940, she drove off the British 7th Cruiser Squadron during the Battle of Cape Teulada. In Mar 1941, she participated in the Battle of Matapan, where Vice Admiral Angelo Iachino's task force centered around Vittorio Veneto hunted for a British convoy but due to failure in intelligence she ended up nearly fallen victim to British guns and aircraft. She suffered damage and returned to Taranto for repairs; she was out of commission for five months. In Jun 1942, she participated in a battle alongside of Littorio where the presence of Italian warship scared off an important British convoy to Alexandria, Egypt. After the Italian surrender, Vittorio Veneto was sent to the Suez Canal. Taken as reparations, she was originally planned to be used against southern coast of Vichy-France and then in the Pacific against Japan, but the plan was not carried out. She was scrapped in 1948.
