ww2dbaseUSS Capitaine was commissioned into service in Jan 1945 with Lieutenant Commander E. S. Friedrick in command. Arriving in US Territory of Hawaii in Apr 1945, she embarked on her first war patrol in the following month, sinking one small craft, Bandai Maru, in the Java Sea. Although she would embark on a second war patrol, the Pacific War would end before she could score a second sinking. She returned to the US in Sep 1945. Between Jan and Mar 1946, she conducted training in Philippine waters, followed by simulated war patrols in 1947 and 1948. She was placed in reserve at Mare Island Navy Yard in Vallejo, California, United States in 1950. She returned to service between 1957 and 1966, serving on the west coast of the United States and in Japan; in 1964, she took part in the filming of the movie "In Harm's Way". On 4 Mar 1966, she was decommissioned from US Navy service, and on the following day she was transferred on loan to Italy. Recommissioned as Alfredo Cappellini (S-507), she would serve in the Italian Navy until 1977, when she was scrapped.
