ww2dbaseThe Steyr M1912 semi-automatic pistols were designed by Karel Krnka of the Austrian firm Steyr Mannlicher. They entered service with the Austro-Hungarian Army in 1914. The original design was chambered for the 9-millimeter Steyr ammunition. Prior to WW1, some examples were exported to Chile, some to Romania, and 10,000 to Germany (chambered for 9-millimeter Parabellum ammunition). During the war, they were known for their reliability even in the poor environments of trenches. During the inter-war years, a commercial version of The Steyr M1912 pistols remained in production. After the German annexation of Austria in early 1938, the German Wehrmacht issued a contract for 60,000 examples; these weapons were designated 9mm P12(Ö) in German service. A small number of them entered Italian service during WW2. Production ended in 1945. Between 1912 and 1945, about 300,000 examples were built.Source: Wikipedia ww2dbase
